Bummer about the milk bank...

My very reliable source tells me that the Prolacta Milk Bank is no longer sending 25% of their milk to South Africa. I guess that there is a lot of controversy within the international milk bank community about Prolacta taking 75% of the breastmilk (25% was going to South Africa) and selling it to the hospitals to use on preemies. They are apparently making a great profit on the milk and the "lactivists" believe that since the milk was freely given it should be freely received. I do not know what Prolacta is doing now or if they have set it up to ship to another milk bank but it is worth checking up on if you are thinking of donating. I still think that the whole idea is brilliant and hope to find another milk bank shipping to the children of Africa. They have not updated their website with this information at this point...

Yeah... it is the same thing. Prolacta is the company that you send your milk to and they no longer ship to anyone is a 3rd World Country (they just haven't changed it on their website). Thanks though!

that sucks.

Totally. I am hoping that they will start shipping it somewhere else soon! There doesn't seem to be anyone else doing that sort of thing globally right now.

hi!
i got to your blog thru amy smith. i donate my milk thru prolacta. after reading you blog post, i immediately emailed robin gaylord at breast milk project and she informed me that that was absolutely not true. she said they had a shipment going out in may to africa. i was concerned because the donation to africa was what drew me to the project in the first place. if you have any quesions, i'm sure robin would be happy to respond to them. they have been nothing short of amazing and i am so impressed with this organization! hope that helps!
